The House of Representatives has approved the committee report on a bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Technology, Badagry, in a significant step towards expanding tertiary education opportunities in Lagos State.
The bill, sponsored by Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and representative of Ikeja Federal Constituency, garnered overwhelming support from lawmakers. Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, representing Badagry Federal Constituency, was a vocal advocate for its passage, citing the immense benefits it holds for the people of Badagry and Lagos State as a whole.
During deliberations, Hon. Faleke stressed the urgent need for a specialized university in Badagry, highlighting the high demand for tertiary education in Lagos. He noted that many Nigerian students resort to pursuing higher education in neighboring Benin Republic due to limited options at home. The proposed institution, he argued, would help address this gap by providing more access to technological education.
Following the approval, Hon. Whingan expressed his gratitude to Hon. Faleke for his leadership and dedication to the bill. Speaking through his media team lead, Mr. Dansu Peter, he acknowledged that Hon. Faleke’s influence was instrumental in advancing the legislation. Hon. Whingan also assured that once the bill passes its third and final reading and receives presidential assent, efforts would commence immediately to bring the project to fruition, transforming Badagry into a hub for technological advancement.
With this latest development, the bill now moves to the final legislative stage before being sent for presidential approval, a crucial step toward establishing the Federal University of Technology, Badagry.
