The decision, announced in a communique signed by the Secretary of the APC Apex Leaders in Olorunda, Hon. Akin Ajayi, marks a departure from a zoning culture that has shaped leadership succession in the LCDA since its creation. Under the previous arrangement, the chairmanship was rotated among the wards in alphabetical order, leading to the emergence of past chairmen such as Hon. Olatunji Abraham Ogabi (now HRM Ọba Olatunji Ogabi of Imeke land) from Ward A, Hon. Abudu Amida from Ward B, and the incumbent, Hon. Samson Folorunso Olatunde, from Ward D.
With only Wards C and E yet to produce a chairman, political observers had widely expected the APC leadership to zone the 2025 chairmanship to one of these wards. However, in a surprising turn of events, the leaders resolved to break from the zoning formula, emphasizing inclusivity and democratic participation.
"After extensive deliberations among the Apex Leaders of Olorunda LCDA, a unanimous decision has been reached that all five wards shall have the opportunity to contest for the Chairmanship position without any ward being disenfranchised," the communique read.
The statement further noted that the resolution was aimed at promoting unity, fairness, and peaceful coexistence among party members while reinforcing democratic principles. Aspirants were urged to conduct themselves with decorum and avoid violence or misconduct during the campaign process.
The announcement has sparked varied reactions within the political landscape of Olorunda LCDA. While some party stakeholders have lauded the move as a progressive step toward inclusivity, others have expressed concerns over the potential disruption of the established power-sharing structure.
As the 2025 local government elections draw closer, the political climate in Olorunda LCDA is expected to intensify, with aspirants from all five wards now preparing to test their popularity at the polls.
