Senator Natasha, representing Kogi Central, was handed a six-month suspension by the Senate on Thursday, following recommendations from the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, which cited violations of Senate rules.
Speaking to State House correspondents after a press briefing on International Women’s Day, Minister Suleiman Ibrahim described the suspension as regrettable, emphasizing the need for unity and increased female representation in the legislature.
“It’s an unfortunate incident that should not have happened. In the last Assembly, we had nine female senators, but in this Assembly, we have only four. We do not want to lose any more women in the Senate or the House of Representatives; rather, we want to increase our numbers,” she stated.
The minister assured that efforts were underway to mediate between both parties, stressing that peace was paramount. “We will engage all stakeholders to ensure justice is tempered with mercy. The Senate President himself has expressed openness to brokering peace, and we will act as intermediaries to make that happen,” she added.
She further called for greater collaboration between male and female lawmakers, underscoring the importance of fostering harmony and mutual respect in governance.
