Lagos Assembly Crisis

A dramatic turn of events unfolded at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, March 3, 2025, as stern, armed security personnel were deployed to cordon off the assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja. This move comes ahead of an emergency plenary session where a major leadership change is expected to take place amid rising tensions.

Since early morning, the security presence, which had already been heightened over the past two weeks, intensified significantly. The heightened security measures signal a pivotal moment in the ongoing political turmoil surrounding the leadership of the Lagos House of Assembly.

Sources have confirmed that the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, is set to tender her resignation, clearing the path for the emergence of a new speaker from the Lagos West zone, in line with the region's zoning arrangement. This resignation is part of an agreement reached following intense negotiations and political maneuvering.

Meanwhile, officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and armed police personnel took up strategic positions around the premises, thoroughly screening everyone, including staff and visitors, before allowing entry into the complex. One anonymous staff member revealed to Vanguard: "The atmosphere in the Assembly this morning is very tense, with heavy security around the premises. It took me over an hour to gain access to the building."

The resolution to remove Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who had been at the center of the crisis, was reportedly reached after weeks of intense political consultations. President Bola Tinubu, along with top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly agreed on a solution over the weekend. As part of the resolution, Obasa will step down from his position, although he will be allowed a soft landing through a resignation rather than a direct removal.

According to sources at the Presidential Villa, key APC figures—including former National Chairman Bisi Akande, ex-Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake, and a former Lagos commissioner—engaged in high-level discussions with President Tinubu, ultimately guiding the decision to bring stability to the assembly.
