The recent suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has sparked outrage, with Hon. Abudu-Akogun Akinlola Olumayowa, a leading Labour Party chairmanship aspirant in Iba Local Council Development Area of Ojo Local Government, Lagos State, condemning the move as unconstitutional and politically motivated..

In a strongly worded statement, Hon. Abudu-Akogun criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s handling of the crisis, describing his press release on the matter as "shallow" and seemingly scripted by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He accused the administration of unfairly holding Governor Fubara solely responsible for the unrest in Rivers State while ignoring Wike’s alleged role in fueling tensions.

“The president lacks the power to suspend a democratically elected governor,” the statement read. “This is a flagrant disregard for the Nigerian constitution and sets a dangerous precedent.”

Hon. Abudu-Akogun further alleged that the crisis in Rivers State is part of a broader strategy to weaken the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s claims that the opposition is being systematically targeted by the current administration.

He linked Governor Fubara’s suspension to recent actions against the PDP, including the revocation of the party’s national secretariat land in Abuja. He also accused Minister Wike of being at the center of the political turmoil and called for his immediate dismissal.

“This same minister has been accused of land grabbing and was allegedly intoxicated during the Indian Prime Minister’s visit, embarrassing Nigeria on the international stage,” the statement claimed.

Drawing a comparison with Lagos politics, Hon. Abudu-Akogun recalled how President Tinubu handled the case of former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, stating that Ambode was removed through the electoral process rather than executive interference. He urged the president to adopt a similar approach in Rivers State.

“Rivers State is crucial to the peace and stability of the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large. The president must do the right thing if he does not want to be remembered as a terrible leader,” he warned.

The statement concluded with a call for the immediate reinstatement of Governor Fubara and the dismissal of Minister Wike to restore peace and stability in Rivers State.
