According to Daily Sun's investigations, a quiet but strategic pact—described by insiders as a "gentleman’s agreement"—has been struck between President Tinubu and a number of first-term PDP governors. These governors, while publicly identifying with the PDP, have allegedly pledged to support the President’s re-election bid in exchange for federal backing to secure their second terms in office.
A top PDP source disclosed: “The deal is simple: support Tinubu in 2027, and he’ll support your re-election. There’s no need to defect to APC. Just deliver the votes when the time comes.” This covert alliance is believed to be at the heart of the leadership crisis and deepening mistrust within the PDP.
The situation was subtly confirmed by Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, who recently said: “I’m supporting Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term. When the time comes, I’ll explain why. For now, let’s stop deceiving ourselves.” His statement, political observers say, underscores the growing trend of PDP governors aligning with the President despite belonging to the opposition.
Only one PDP governor, known for his abrasive political style and complex local dynamics, is said to be outside this pact, sources noted.
Further compounding the PDP’s internal crisis is the influential role of former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Widely acknowledged as a kingmaker in the current dispensation, Wike’s support for Tinubu is said to have entrenched the President’s influence across PDP strongholds.
A source familiar with the developments explained: “Wike may not be on good terms with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, but both are aligned in their support for Tinubu—especially if Atiku Abubakar wins the PDP ticket again. Bala Mohammed and his allies have made it clear that they won’t support anyone who didn’t back them during the 2023 polls. This includes Atiku, whom they accuse of betrayal.”
According to insider accounts, Wike is also actively pulling strings in the unresolved battle over the PDP National Secretary position, with his allies in Plateau, Adamawa, and Oyo States allegedly aligning with him behind the scenes.
This political chess game, analysts believe, is a critical part of Tinubu’s 2027 strategy. The President, like his predecessors, is not hiding his ambition for a second term. With recent defections to the APC in the National Assembly, momentum appears to be building in his favor.
History supports this pattern: Since 2003, no party—whether ruling or opposition—has clinched the presidency without a series of defections and strategic realignments. In 2015, APC benefited immensely from high-profile PDP defections. In 2019, the tide shifted slightly, but the script remained the same.
Now, as 2027 approaches, the PDP appears to be reliving the same cycle—this time, with internal betrayal and quiet collaboration with the ruling APC threatening to render it toothless.
The storm rocking the PDP shows no signs of subsiding. And with covert deals, growing defections, and strategic alignments working in Tinubu’s favor, it’s becoming increasingly clear why the opposition’s storm may not still soon.
