BREAKING: Full Details of LASIEC Guidelines for 2025 Lagos Local Government Elections

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has released the official guidelines for the 2025 Local Government elections, outlining critical dates, eligibility criteria, and procedures for prospective candidates and political parties across the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs.

According to the guidelines seen by Badagry Today The commission, chaired by Hon. Justice Bola Okikio-Ighile (Rtd), announced that nomination forms (LASIEC 001, 002, 007, 007A, and 008) will be available for collection from Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at LASIEC Headquarters in Yaba. Submission of completed LASIEC 001 forms is mandatory by Thursday, May 22, 2025, while all other processes are to conclude by 12 noon on Tuesday, May 20.

Administrative Fees and Exemptions

Candidates for Chairmanship positions are required to pay an administrative fee of ₦150,000; Vice Chairmanship, ₦75,000; and Councillorship, ₦50,000. However, female aspirants and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) are exempt from payment. All payments are to be made to the Lagos State Government using Revenue Code 33101 and Agency Code 77095.

Requirements for Candidacy

Prospective candidates must meet age and educational requirements — a minimum of 30 years for Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship aspirants, and 25 years for Councillorship. At least a Secondary School Certificate is required. Submissions must include a curriculum vitae, birth certificate or affidavit of age, party membership card, voter’s card (for both candidate and sponsors), and where applicable, a letter of disengagement from public service not less than 30 days to the election.

Nomination and Verification Process

Chairmanship candidates must secure nominations from 20 registered voters across at least two-thirds of the wards in their respective LGAs or LCDAs, while councillorship aspirants require support from 10 registered voters within the ward.

Credential verification will take place from June 26 to June 30 at LASIEC Headquarters between 10am and 6pm daily. The final list of validated candidates will be publicly displayed on July 1, 2025.

Candidate Withdrawals and Voter Register

Political parties may withdraw nominations between May 29 and May 31, while individual candidates may withdraw from June 2 to June 9. The voters’ register will be on display at all Ward Collation Centres on June 28, 2025.

Campaign Guidelines and Penalties

LASIEC reiterated that campaigns must be issue-based, prohibiting hate speech, religious or ethnic incitement, and bribery. Rallies must not occur simultaneously at the same venue. Campaigns are restricted to specific areas — LGAs or LCDAs for Chairmanship and wards for Councillorship — and must end daily by 6pm. The final day for campaigning is Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 6pm.

LASIEC warns that any breach of these guidelines will attract penalties in accordance with the LASIEC Law of 2008 (as amended).

The comprehensive guideline aims to ensure transparency, inclusiveness, and fairness in the upcoming grassroots elections.

For further information, stakeholders are encouraged to visit LASIEC Headquarters at 1 Lancaster Street, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.
