Starting May 5, 2025, Meta will officially end support for WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business on a range of older smartphones. The move is part of the company's efforts to improve performance, enhance security, and optimize the app for newer devices.

According to Meta, the change is necessary to ensure the platform remains efficient and secure, particularly as older operating systems can no longer support newer features or safeguard user data effectively.

Who’s Affected?

The update targets older Apple and Android devices that no longer meet WhatsApp's minimum software requirements. Users with affected models are advised to upgrade their phones to avoid losing access to the messaging service.

Apple Devices Losing Access

WhatsApp will now require iOS 15.1 or later. The following iPhone models will no longer be supported, as they cannot be updated beyond iOS 12.5.7:

• iPhone 5s

• iPhone 6

• iPhone 6 Plus

Android Devices Losing Access

As of January 1, 2025, WhatsApp had already dropped support for Android devices running version 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier. Many of these devices can’t be updated beyond that version and will permanently lose access.

What Users Should Do:

Anyone still using these models is encouraged to upgrade to a newer smartphone to continue using WhatsApp without interruptions. The app will no longer function on unsupported devices after the deadline.
