Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC apprehended one Olawole Sunday, a suspected scammer who allegedly specialised in purchasing bank account details from individuals, which he then used to perpetrate financial fraud.
According to the EFCC, Sunday lured young Nigerians into opening multiple bank accounts, offering them between N25,000 and N50,000 for each account in exchange for their full banking details, including Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards.
The fraudulent scheme came to light following a petition involving a N2 million scam, in which Sunday reportedly used the bank account of one Uyi Godstime Eghosa to pose as a forex trader. Eghosa was initially arrested but claimed ignorance of the fraudulent activities, revealing that he had sold his account to Sunday for N25,000.
Following Eghosa's disclosure, operatives tracked down and arrested Sunday, who confessed to the crime. The EFCC has confirmed that he will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
The Commission has warned the public, especially young people, against selling their bank accounts, stressing that such actions could make them unwitting accomplices to criminal activities.
