LAGOS STATE PDP CHAIRMAN PHILIP AIVOJI

The Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Philip Aivoji, has raised serious concerns over the integrity of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), accusing the electoral body of lacking transparency ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.

Speaking on Thursday, April 17, 2025, during a Town Hall Meeting organised by News Central Television for political party chairpersons in the state, Aivoji criticised LASIEC's handling of the electoral process, pointing to irregularities and a pattern of disenfranchisement that he said undermines democratic participation.

“The electoral commission is not being straightforward in what they do,” Aivoji stated, stressing the urgent need for fairness and openness in the process. He alleged that the system currently in place favours the ruling party and leaves opposition voices at a disadvantage.

He also lamented what he described as the ruling party’s disconnect from the grassroots and failure to deliver good governance, noting that the voices of many voters across Lagos are being silenced through systematic exclusion.

Addressing the need for a united opposition, Aivoji called on all political parties under the umbrella of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) to rally together in preparation for the elections. He emphasised the importance of a coordinated strategy to challenge what he termed a failing administration.

“We discussed democracy, how to strengthen the opposition, and how we can come together to effect change in Lagos. The people deserve better leadership—one that listens, engages and delivers,” he said.

Aivoji’s comments underscore growing tension in the lead-up to the local polls, as opposition parties intensify calls for electoral reform and greater accountability from LASIEC.
